Biosecurity Dive Technician

Are you passionate about New Zealand’s biosecurity? Do you have an interest in working to protect our marine and aquatic environment from pest species? If so, this may be just what you are looking for.
We are looking for an individual to join our passionate Biosecurity team with a particular focus on freshwater and marine biosecurity management. You will be involved in supporting the delivery of biosecurity activities for our pest programmes and assisting other teams requiring dive work when required.
Te āhuatunga a te tūranga | About the role
Our Biosecurity team is responsible for managing the control of pest plans and animals in the Bay of Plenty and this is important work to protect our native fauna and flora on land and in our moana. Our team works hard to improve the Biosecurity network that is in place that supports the Top of the North Marine Biology Partnership, and you will play a key role in strengthening this further.
You will be an active diver who is confident working around water as well as enjoying being active outdoors. This role will engage with the community by establishing different initiatives, creating awareness of biosecurity threats that we face in the aquatic environment including implementing educational programmes on pest management. You will work on projects identified in the Regional Pest Management plan and enforce these requirements to relevant stakeholders.
We seek someone with sound judgement, initiative and great communication skills. You will have good computer skills with an ability to work with GPS/ GIS and database technology.
Ō pūmanawa | Your skills and experience
To be successful in this role, you will have the following:
- Minimum diving qualifications – Dive-master / Instructor certificates
- A Diploma in Marine sciences is desirable
- Good Knowledge in Marine and Freshwater pests
- ADAS Commercial dive certification or Work Safe Scientific diver certification is desirable
- A Boating certificate (SRL) is desirable A Grow safe Certificate is desirable
