We are seeking a Compliance Officer for our Pollution Complaints Response Team. The ideal candidate will effectively engage with members of the community, fostering solutions for better environmental outcomes and ensuring compliance. Essential skills include self-motivation, keen attention to detail, and excellent communication abilities. 

This role would suit an enthusiastic individual who is adaptable and a good team player, and has relevant post-qualification work experience in assessing compliance of activities under the RMA. 

Te āhuatunga a te tūranga | About the role

Primarily based in Tauranga, with opportunities to work region-wide, and reporting directly to a Compliance Team Leader, you will join a dynamic and hardworking team to:

  • Respond to and investigate environmental complaints across the region
  • Promote, educate and inform people on strategies to achieve compliance
  • Direct and assist with chemical or oil spill clean-ups
  • Collaborate with agencies such as territorial authorities, Work Safe, DOC, FENZ, NZ Police, and other stakeholders
  • Manage sensitive and contentious issues with consent holders.

As a member of the Compliance Team, you will monitor resource consents and regional rules to ensure compliance. When conditions are breached, we work with consent holders to restore compliance. We promote the 4Es model to encourage compliance: Engage, Educate, Enable, and Enforce.

Ō pūmanawa | Your skills and experience

  • A relevant tertiary degree in science, environmental management or similar
  • At least one year of experience working in compliance under the Resource Management Act 1991 (RMA)
  • Creative approach to problem solving
  • High level of attention to detail
  • Great written and verbal communication skills Community, cultural, Tikanga Māori and political awareness
