We're looking for a motivated and detail-oriented Assistant Accountant to join our Finance team in a full-time, fixed-term role for two years.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone with accounting or finance experience who enjoys solving problems, working collaboratively, and contributing to the delivery of high-quality financial information. Te āhuatunga a te tūranga | About the role

Reporting to the Financial Accounting Team Lead and working closely with the wider Finance team, you'll play an important role in supporting Bay of Plenty Regional Council's financial operations, reporting requirements, and audit processes.

This is a varied role that provides exposure to a broad range of accounting responsibilities, including financial accounting, asset accounting, compliance, and statutory reporting. Key responsibilities include:

  • Assisting with asset accounting activities, including maintaining asset records and supporting valuation and reporting processes.
  • Preparing and reconciling balance sheet accounts and investigating variances.
  • Supporting month-end and year-end financial reporting requirements.
  • Assisting with GST, FBT and other compliance-related returns.
  • Responding to financial queries from across the organisation.
  • Supporting internal and external audit processes and responding to audit requests.
  • Contributing to process improvements and maintaining strong financial controls.
  • Assisting with a range of accounting and reporting tasks across the Finance team.

We're looking for someone who brings:

  • Previous accounting, finance, payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, bookkeeping or similar financial experience.
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy.
  • Well-developed analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • The ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Experience using financial systems and Microsoft Excel.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
  • A willingness to learn, take initiative, and work as part of a supportive team.
